Raising pigs for 4-H

If you’re son or daughter is thinking about raising a pig for their 4-H project, I can’t think of a better project for them to do. Especially if they’ve been exposed to the “swine curriculum” that 4-H has made available to students. They’ll learn everything they need to know about naming breeds, learning about swine body parts, judging market hogs, managing baby pigs, exploring swine diseases, discovering swine careers, planning breeding systems, and exploring career opportunities and international markets. They even get a chance to learn about the pork quality assurance program. 4-H has made it easy for any student, starting in grade 3, to begin thinking about the benefits of raising a pig for their initial project, and later, as a possible long-term career. The national 4-H curriculum is focused on their three primary mission mandates: Science, Engineering, & Technology; Healthy Living; and Citizenship.
